Artist statement

On Mirage series
A 'mirage', defined as a deception or an optical illusion, suggests a shift in our experience of reality, especially regarding visual information. The optical illusion shows a non-existing thing but is at the same time the product of something that actually exists.

Mirage is a collective title for various series of photographs and videos with the same subject matter. The body of work dates back to 2007 and continues until today as a work in progress. The series are divided into three pictorial genres: portrait, landscape and still life. With this categorization I would like to establish a dialogue between traditional, historical photography and my own work, and analyze certain canons adapted from art history (painting).
These series are documentary and address cultural identity. Cultural identity as the identity of a group, a culture or an individual belonging to that group or culture is a research field in which I can examine the identity of the recorded locations as well as my own identity. Most of the works were realized in the urban areas of Brussels and Zagreb, two working and living addresses.
