ON THE WINTER GARDEN SERIES 2006-2010
Gardens which I photograph are created on a type of no-mans land, in so called non-urban zones, the empty spaces of the city, and always next to large residential settlements. In order to create them, you need a large piece of land, absence of private property, and residet of neighborng buildings. This is the constellation which creates this curious space of suburban gardens.
I photograph the gardens in the winter, out of season, and without people. This is when they are out of function, and they become even more non-defined, and as such, gain new meaning. Due to their temporary nature, the gardens are spaces where the function of things is reassigned. What dominates is the process of recycling, improvisation, formal mess, and accidental ecology. The gardens function as contemplative playgrounds for adults, or as sanctuary for citizens who carry nostalgia for the rural, or a potential refuge for the socially endangered. The gardens are a reflection of the need for context, which surpasses the basic function of the street. These are symbolic points which are left out of the city's urban zone, because they are outside the reach of primary architecture. The gardens are places of superstructure, as squares and parks always used to be.
However, the gardens are spaces without a future; these are locations of future shopping malls, and other commercial-residential eventualities. Today’s state of formal neglect is probably more advanced than what is planned to be made through urbanization in the process of transition. The garden spaces are the opposite or everything they appear to be, and in comparison to the future, they represent to elite spot in the spayed city architecture.
In Zagreb, winter of 2006
P.S. 4 years later, I went to photograph the gardens again. A large part of what I recorded doesn’t exist anymore. To be expected. The city spreads and eats the meadows which were left behind. It seems that even the three points mentioned in the text above have disappeared, the remaining gardens show that the socially endangered – are their only visitors.
