Petar Dabac


Born in Zagreb, 1942. Graduated at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb. Started working in photography in 1960. Worked at studio Atelier Toše Dabca, which he took over after Tošo's death in 1970. Started working as an independent artist from 1966, and has been a member of ULUPUH since 1970.

In the period between 1980 and 1987, he organized approx. 40 photography exhibitions of local and international artists, in the gallery founded as part of Atelier Toše Dabca. Was one of the founders of the photography magazine SPOT in 1972.

Has been teaching photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana since 1990. During the 1960s he created a series of black and white portraits of artists, friends, art scene representatives, which he continued during the next few decades.

During the 1970s he was part of the generation which brought a conceptual approach to photography, created spatial installations, experimented with photocopies and photograms. In 1982, he published a series of photographs The Feeling of Nature Towards the End of the 20th Century (17 photographs), with foreword by Annie Le Brun. During the second half on the 1980s he created a cycle of portraits in color. In 1990, he started a photography journal which has remained a type of work in progress until today.
